Historic parks and gardens

A small number of families - the Ingilby’s, Yorkes, Mowbrays, Danbys and Markenfields - were responsible for significant buildings and designed landscapes of varying degrees of grandeur in the Nidderdale AONB.

These historic parks and gardens distinguish Nidderdale AONB from some of the wilder parts of the Pennines. Several such as the Swinton Park estate, Markenfield Hall, Hackfall, Fishpond Wood and Studley Royal are local attractions and all of the historic parks and gardens have intriguing historic stories to tell.

Today

Many of the parks and gardens in the AONB are open to visitors. See our attractions pages and map for more information about how to visit.
